College Policies: Mount Carmel College Specific

Accidental Exposure to Communicable Disease

A student who experiences an accidental exposure to a communicable disease during a clinical experience must notify his/her clinical instructor immediately. The instructor will advise the student on the procedure to follow. The student is responsible for the cost of any treatment/medications/lab tests incurred. If the infectious disease physician on call deems lab testing and medication necessary, treatment will be initiated and the student will be billed at a later date. Mount Carmel Health will cover the cost of any patient testing necessary if the incident occurred at a Mount Carmel Health System facility.

If the incident occurred at an agency/facility other than Mount Carmel Health System entities, the student should report the incident to his/her instructor immediately and the instructor will initiate the procedure as indicated by the facility/agency’s infection control policy and contractual agreement with the College.

Functional Abilities and Performance Standards

MCCN believes that certain functional abilities and performance standards are necessary for the safe practice of professional nursing. These include:

  1. the ability to see, hear, touch, smell, and distinguish colors;
  2. the ability to speak and write with accuracy, clarity, and efficiency;
  3. manual dexterity (gross and fine movements);
  4. the ability to learn, think critically, analyze, assess, solve problems, and reach judgment; and
  5. emotional stability and the ability to accept responsibility and accountability.

Students need to demonstrate satisfactory application of these functions and competencies during their course of study in nursing.

Accommodation for Student Learning Needs

  1. The College will provide reasonable accommodations for students with documented learning needs. A copy of the official documentation is to be provided to the College office for placement in the student’s academic file and to the Coordinator of the Academic Support Office.
  2. The student is responsible for notifying faculty in each course as to the documented learning needs. The faculty will then collaborate with the Coordinator of the Academic Support Office to plan accommodation.
  3. Any provision for offering additional assistance in a course to students without documented learning needs, such as extended time for testing, will be made at the direction of the Academic Support Office Coordinator in conjunction with the lead Course Coordinator.
  4. The College publishes the availability of support for learning needs. However, the College does not seek out students with learning needs. The individual student is responsible for seeking documentation, bringing his/her needs to the College’s attention, and requesting accommodation.

Requests for Modifications for the ANCC Certification Examinations

American Nurses Credentialing Center (ANCC) and its testing vendor make every effort to reasonably accommodate candidates with documented disabilities as defined by the Americans with Disabilities Act (ADA). If you have a disability as defined under the ADA, you must notify ANCC by submitting the following information with your application:

A report regarding your request from your physician or a qualified healthcare professional is required. The information must be on the physician’s or other qualified healthcare professional’s letterhead, typed, dated, and signed by the healthcare professional. The report must document the following information in order to be considered:

  • A specific diagnosis and date of your diagnosis
  • Specific and current findings that support your diagnosis (relevant medical history, tests administered, date of the most current evaluation, within the last 3 years)
  • A description of your substantial day-to-day functional limitations resulting from your stated disabilities
  • Specific recommendations for your testing accommodation(s) including a detailed explanation of why the accommodation is needed. If the accommodation includes extra time, please indicate the amount of time requested.

Important Note: Additional information may be requested after a review of your information.

APA Format

Because it is the acceptable format for written papers in scientific disciplines, the College requires the latest edition of the American Psychological Association (APA) style for all student papers.

Bicycle Storage

A storage shed for bicycles is available behind the resident apartments. Students should notify the Director of Student Life (ccipriani@mccn.edu, 614-234-5828) for details and access.

Cell Phones

Personal cell phone use is prohibited in classrooms, laboratories, and in clinical experiences. Faculty and students must turn off and stow cell phones in purses or book bags before the start of class and during all exams. Cell phones should be turned off or quieted during meetings.

The College has provided education software for students and faculty for use on their personal handheld devices in situations including clinical areas. The devices are only to be used in clinical areas as an education resource in the provision of patient care. Any abuse of this policy will result in losing the privilege to use the electronic educational resources and mobile devices in clinical experiences and classroom settings. This policy applies to all students and faculty members at MCCN.

Change of Address/Phone/Email

Students should report in a timely manner any change of address, telephone number(s), or personal email address to the Office of Records and Registration (Rm. 201, Marian Hall). Name changes require additional documentation. Accurate contact information will ensure that the College can reach students as needed.

Children on Campus

Students are not permitted to bring children to class. Students violating this policy will be asked to leave class. Also, babysitting is not permitted in the College of Nursing. In addition to the issue of liability, the presence of infants and children in the College is not conducive to study and relaxation.

Communications Alert System

Students can self-register for the Mount Carmel College of Nursing Communications Alert System for alerts and information in times of crisis, disaster, and weather situations. Students must use an MCCN computer to register for the Communications Alert System. Register at: http://mccnalert.mccn.int and follow the prompts. Be sure to do the self-test that is part of the self-registration process to confirm that registration has taken place.

Alert system messages are text only and can be sent to cell phones, pagers, personal computers, or other electronic message devices. There is no limit to the number of devices that can be registered. In order to be contacted, you must register and check the box agreeing to assume any charges for alert system messages. Once registered, you must update any changes to listed devices, such as new phone numbers, as necessary. If you have questions about the alert system, please contact College Relations at 614-234-1372 or rhutchinsonbell@mccn.edu.

In the event of a potentially dangerous situation involving the College community (on or off campus) that, in the judgement of the College President/Dean in consultation with Mount Carmel West (MCW) Security constitutes an ongoing or continuing threat, a campus-wide “timely warning” will be issued to students and employees via the Communications Alert System, if deemed appropriate, by in-class announcements or other appropriate means. Depending on the type of emergency, the message may direct receivers to the MCCN website (www.mccn.edu) for additional and specific information. Anyone with information warranting a timely warning should report the circumstance by phone to the President/Dean (614-234-5213) or in person at the President/Dean’s office (Marian Hall, Rm 169).

In addition to these notifications, MCW maintains a Communiations Alert Hotline (614-234-5555) to alert employees and students regarding information and instructions regarding emergency situations.

Course and Instructor Evaluations

Student completion of course and instructor evaluations is an expectation of each course. Students are expected to complete the appropriate evaluations during the last two weeks of the course and prior to the final day of class.

Counseling Services

Students are entitled to participate in the Mount Carmel Health System Employee Assistance Program; services are provided through HelpNet. This program helps individuals resolve personal problems relating to stress, anxiety, depression, marital and family issues, financial and legal concerns, emotional problems, or addiction. The program includes up to ten sessions with a counselor at no charge to the student. Appointments can be scheduled by calling 1-800-969-6162, a 24-hour crisis line number. Students with questions regarding this service should contact a member of the College Executive Team.

Dress Code

Failure to comply with the dress code may result in disciplinary actions including, but not limited to, dismissal from the classroom or clinical site. Any adaptations to this policy due to cultural or health reasons are to be negotiated with the Associate Deans.

The student dress code is enforced with the goal to assure a high standard in professional self presentation. It is important for Mount Carmel students to recognize their role as representatives of the College and the profession of nursing in all settings. Appearance and self presentation must be commensurate with professional expectations

College Identification (ID) Badge

Students are issued identification (ID) badges as part of the first semester registration process. Badges serve a number of functions, including identifying students in the College and providing access to College services.

Students must wear ID badges at all times while in the role as a Mount Carmel student, following these guidelines:

  • Badges must be attached to a badge holder and worn at chest level.
  • Badges and badge holders must be free of pins, keys, stickers, or other ornamentation.
  • Lanyards are not acceptable and must be replaced with badge holders.
  • If a student does not have an ID badge, a temporary ID badge must be obtained from the Office of Safety and Security.

Badges must be returned to the Director of Records and Registration if a student withdraws from the College or takes a leave of absence. Lost ID badges can be replaced (for a fee) at the Mount Carmel West Safety and Security Office.

Dress Code – College Areas/Hospital Campus

Students should present a positive, businesslike, and professional image through dress and actions. In classrooms, main lounge, first floor of the College, the pedestrian mall, cafeteria, and library, all students are expected to wear clothing that is neat, clean, and appropriate for the setting. The style of clothing must not be unduly revealing; proper undergarments are to be worn and not visible. Short shorts, mini-skirts, tank tops, house slippers, and pajamas are not permitted. Exposure of abdomen, cleavage and/or buttocks, and bare feet are not permitted. Sunbathing is not permitted on the hospital and/or College campus.

Student Attire – Non-uniform Clinical Sites

Students must be professionally dressed in clinical areas. College identification badges must be clearly displayed. Student dress must be consistent with standards and requirements of the clinical environment and expectations of the faculty and preceptors.

Student Lab Coat Policy

The clean, pressed lab coat must be worn over street clothes when students enter the clinical area to study clients’ charts, check assignments, or visit clients. The lab coat is to be worn over professional and neat clothing. The length of dresses or skirts must at least come to the top of the knees. No hats, jeans, shorts, Capri pants, sweats, sandals, or flip-flops are permitted. The College ID badge must be evident at chest level on the lab coat.

Adult Health Clinical Nurse Specialist, Nursing Administration and Nursing Education Students Lab Coat

Master’s students in the Adult Health Clinical Nurse Specialist, Nursing Administration and Nursing Education tracks have the option to wear the Graduate Lab Coat. The link to Flagstaff Uniform http://www.flagstaffuniforms.com/html/schools_mtcarmel.htm

When ordering your graduate lab coats, please make sure you tell Flagstaff your credentials and where to place commas between them. For most of you, this should be “BSN, RN” or for those with a master’s degree “MSN, RN”. The degree always stays closest to your name because the degree cannot be taken away. Licenses and certifications can.

Nurse Practitioner Students Lab Coat Requirement:

All nurse practitioner students must wear the Graduate Lab Coat.

Food in Classrooms

Students who bring food/beverages into classrooms are expected to clean up after themselves and deposit trash in appropriate receptacles. Courteous behavior such as this will enable students in subsequent classes to enjoy a clean environment. It is everyone’s responsibility to keep campus facilities clean and neat.

Health Services

It is highly recommended that all students have their own personal family physician and health insurance coverage. The College does not offer health insurance coverage.

Students requiring emergency care may utilize any of the emergency departments (ED) of the Mount Carmel Health System. Students are responsible for the cost of emergency care and all charges incurred during an ED visit (e.g., medications, treatments, laboratory tests, and x-rays).

The Student Health Nurse is available during weekdays either by phone (614-234-5408) or in person (office #309). The student health program is coordinated by a Registered Nurse and includes health guidance. The Student Health Nurse will carry out any specific physician’s orders for dispensing medications and appropriate treatments.

TB skin testing, Hepatitis B vaccines, and Meningitis vaccines are available in the Student Health Office. The routine TB skin testing is provided free of charge (included in student’s Semester General Fee). Hepatitis B and Meningitis vaccines are charged in accordance with the pharmacy list price.

Influenza Vaccine

Influenza vaccines will be available (based on availability of the vaccine) to students at no cost annually beginning in late October.

Paging

The College paging system provides for faculty and student contact in Marian Hall. Pages are placed by contacting the College receptionist (ext. 5-5800 or 5-1652). Pages may be answered on any campus phone. Please acknowledge a page by calling the receptionist as soon as possible after the page is heard. Paging from Marian Hall is not broadcast to the Center for Learning and Education.

Because of the great number of telephone calls and pages that arrive at the reception desk between the hours of 9:00 a.m. – 5:00 p.m., Monday through Friday, no student-to-student paging is normally permitted during those hours.

Parking

To park on the Mount Carmel campus, a College of Nursing student parking permit must be displayed on the vehicle. Permits are available at the Mount Carmel West Safety and Security Office, located adjacent to the Souder Avenue entrance to Mount Carmel West Hospital (call 614-234-5283 for office hours).

Required information to obtain a parking permit includes license plate number, make, model, year, and color of the vehicle. The student parking permit should be displayed on the rear window or rear bumper (driver’s side).

Students who are employees of Mount Carmel West will park in the same parking area at all times whether on campus for work or school. For these student/employees, an employee parking permit and a student parking permit must be displayed on the vehicle.

Commuter Student Parking

Free parking for Mount Carmel College of Nursing (MCCN) commuter students is available in various locations on campus. Details regarding specific parking areas are communicated to students at the start of the academic year in August. In general, freshmen, sophomores, juniors and all apartment residents will park in the Employee Garage (corner of West Town St. and South Davis Ave.); non-resident seniors will park in Garage P2 (corner of Mount Carmel Mall and South Davis Ave.).

Upon request, Mount Carmel West Safety and Security will provide escort service for MCCN students to their parked cars after dark. Students may contact the MCCN receptionist in Marian Hall (614-234-5800) or call the MCW hospital operator (614-234-5000) to request an escort.

On-Street Parking

Students should park only in assigned areas to ensure vehicle safety. Parking on neighborhood streets is not an option. On-street parking is for area residents only, and it is important to respect the need for area residents to park in front of their homes.

Parking Violations

Mount Carmel Security Officers will ticket and/or tow student cars as necessary. Towing charges are the responsibility of the student. The Safety and Security Office will send notification of a parking violation to the College for the student’s file. Students receiving more than one ticket may have their cars “booted” or towed. Fines and violations issued by the City of Columbus are the responsibility of the student receiving the ticket.

Photocopying

Photocopiers are available for students in the Marian Hall Rec Room and in the Health Sciences Library at a minimal charge per page.

Publicity

The College is interested in publicizing academic and personal achievements by students, within FERPA guidelines. Students must sign a release before any non-directory information is released to newspapers or other sources.

Smoking Policy

Mount Carmel is a tobacco and smoke-free facility. Use of tobacco products, including, but not limited to cigarettes, cigars, chewing tobacco, and pipes is prohibited within all Mount Carmel facilities, on all Mount Carmel owned property, or any College student residence facilities. The College complies fully with all federal, state, city, and Mount Carmel Health System regulations regarding the possession and consumption of alcohol, drugs, and tobacco on campus, including the residence apartments.

Further, students are prohibited from smoking anywhere while wearing the student uniform, lab coat, and/or student ID badge. Violators will receive one verbal warning. The consequences of continued non-compliance include progressive counseling and may result in dismissal from the Resident Apartments and/or College.

Social Media Policy

At Mount Carmel College of Nursing (MCCN) we understand that social media, such as Facebook, Twitter, YouTube, Blogs and LinkedIn, are powerful and important communication channels that can significantly impact our community and our organization’s reputation and brand loyalty.

To assist in managing and posting information on such sites, the College has developed a policy and guidelines to help clarify how best to enhance and protect professional and personal reputations when participating in social media. This policy applies to all faculty, staff, students, and alumni in association with MCCN social media accounts.

Social Media Protocol at Mount Carmel College of Nursing

The purpose of using social media channels at MCCN is to support the mission, vision, programs, and services of MCCN and to effectively communicate news, issues, and events with the community and among key stakeholders.

All College sponsored social media sites will be administered and monitored by the MCCN College Relations Department to ensure brand positioning. All information for posting should be sent directly to this department. The College has the right to remove comments and content from its social media sites if they compromise privacy, contain inappropriate language, are inaccurate, or impact organizational integrity.

The general social media guidelines and policies of Trinity Health, the MCCN parent organization, must be taken into consideration, where applicable, when using social media channels.

Mount Carmel College of Nursing Social Media Strategy

Social media initiatives at Mount Carmel College of Nursing are designed to connect key stakeholders, establish relationships and a sense of community, and help maintain brand loyalty.

The strategy behind MCCN social media is to create a social community for Mount Carmel College of Nursing students, faculty, alumni, prospective students, and other key stakeholders to encourage dialogue and aid in brand loyalty. Participation will be encouraged through various marketing and communications initiatives including: articles in campus paper, emails to students and faculty, posting on Carmel Link, placing social media icons on the College website homepage and utilizing icons when appropriate for advertising.

Our social media campaign began with the launch of two Facebook sites (Alumni and College) in 2010 and a YouTube channel in early 2011. A college Twitter account has been secured and will be launched at a later date.

Mount Carmel College of Nursing Comment Policy

We encourage your comments on Mount Carmel College of Nursing’s various social media sites and hope you will join the discussions. We can’t respond to every comment, particularly those that deal with individual medical cases and issues. We reserve the right to remove posts that:

  • Post advertisements or solicitations of a business.
  • Post chain letters or pyramid schemes.
  • Impersonate another person.
  • Allow any other person or entity to use your identification for posting or viewing comments.
  • Post the same note more than once or “spam.” Infringe on the rights of any third party, including intellectual property, privacy or publicity rights.
  • Are unlawful, obscene, defamatory, threatening, harassing, abusive, slanderous, hateful, or embarrassing to any other person or entity as determined by MCCN in its sole discretion.
  • Are abusive, illegal or disruptive, or that otherwise fail to conform to these Terms and Conditions.

By posting any comments, posts or other material on MCCN-sponsored social media, you give Mount Carmel College of Nursing the irrevocable right to reproduce, distribute, publish, display, edit, modify, create derivative works from, and otherwise use your submission for any purpose in any form and on any media.

Finally, you agree that you will indemnify Mount Carmel College of Nursing against any damages, losses, liabilities, judgments, costs or expenses (including reasonable attorneys’ fees and costs) arising out of a claim by a third party relating to any material you have posted.

General Guidelines for the safe use of social media tools:

  • Protect confidential and proprietary information: Do not post confidential or proprietary information about patients, faculty, staff, alumni or other students. Key College stakeholders must still follow the applicable federal requirements such as FERPA and HIPA in cyberspace and adhere to all applicable College privacy and confidentiality policies. Individuals who share confidential information do so at the risk of disciplinary action or dismissal.
  • Personal privacy: Avoid publishing personal contact details where they can be accessed and used widely by people you did not intend to see them. It is better to contact an individual outside the collaborative space if you want to take something off-line.
  • Respect copyright and fair use: Always consider copyright and intellectual property rights when utilizing social media sites.
  • Don’t use the MCCN logos for endorsements: Do not use the Mount Carmel College of Nursing logo or any other College images or iconography on personal social media sites. Be cognizant of pictures of students in their uniform where the MCCN logo can be seen.
  • Identify yourself: When discussing MCCN or its business, always identify clearly who you are, what your role in MCCN is and publish in the first person. Use a disclaimer when appropriate.
  • Disclaimer: If you are publishing information about MCCN or your role in MCCN you should use a disclaimer along the following lines: “The views expressed on this site are my own and don’t reflect the views of my employer.”
  • Personal responsibility: You are personally responsible for content you publish using social media tools. Remember that what you publish will be public for many years. There is no complete delete online.
  • Liability: Always remember that the same laws, professional expectations, and guidelines for interacting in person also apply online. Individuals are liable for anything they post to social media sites. This policy is not inclusive of all situations related to social media.
  • Keep calm: Don’t pick fights by escalating heated discussions. Be conciliatory, respectful and quote facts to lower the temperature and correct misrepresentations. Never contribute to a discussion if you are angry: leave it, calm down, and return to it at a later date when you can contribute in a calm and rational manner.
  • Personal judgment: If you feel even slightly uneasy about something you are about to publish, the chances are you shouldn’t do it. Before posting anything think about the consequences of what would happen in the event that it becomes widely known (for example printed in a newspaper or posted on a billboard) and how that would impact everyone involved. Search engines can retrieve posts years after they were created or deleted and communications can be forwarded or copied. There is no complete delete online.
  • Respect: Don’t use ethnic slurs, personal insults, obscenity, or engage in any conduct that would be unacceptable in a MCCN workplace. Always consider others’ privacy and avoid discussing topics that may be inflammatory e.g. politics and religion.
  • Etiquette: Before your first contribution on any social media site, it is a good idea to observe the activity on the site for a while before launching in yourself to get a feel for the style of contributions, the nature of the content and any ‘unwritten’ rules that other contributors might follow.
  • Terms of service: Obey the Terms of Service of any social media platform employed.

Student Communication

Information is frequently transmitted to students through student email (mccn.edu), the CARMELink student portal, the College newsletter (Carmel Rapper), bulletin board notices, or messages placed in student mailboxes.

Students are expected to check their email and CARMELink accounts frequently and to check their mailboxes when they are on campus. The bulletin board across from the first floor elevators is used for general College announcements.

Surveys and Research access to Students, Faculty and Staff

Each year, there are many requests from those within and outside the College for access to students, faculty, and staff for the purposes of surveys or research projects. Because of the need to limit the burden on students, faculty and staff in responding to these requests, all requests for survey or research access to members of the College community must be submitted in writing to the Assessment/Outcomes Committee at least two weeks before the start of the project.

The approval requirement is especially important in light of the number of official College surveys that are sanctioned by College committees and/or the Faculty and College Assemblies each year. When potential survey respondents are overloaded with survey requests, they may experience “survey fatigue,” resulting in low response rates for very important surveys the College conducts as a part of its educational and organizational assessment efforts.

The approval process above is necessary before any use of Mount Carmel computer or technology infrastructure is initiated for the purposes of surveys or research. This would include College webspace, computer equipment, and the course management system. Approval is also required before paper surveys and/or research tools can be distributed internally via student, faculty, or staff College mailboxes. ( Administrative team, May 2007; updated July 2010)

Technology Policy

Mount Carmel College of Nursing (MCCN) recognizes that principles of academic freedom, freedom of speech, and privacy hold important implications for information technology use and services. The College provides all information technology resources in support of the teaching, learning, research, and community/public service mission of the College and all administrative functions that support this mission. While the College may limit the use of some computers or resources to specific research or teaching missions, freedom of expression will generally be protected. While the College rejects censorship, behavior that constitutes misconduct will not be protected. Such behavior includes, but is not limited to, the use of MCCN’s information technology resources in connection with child pornography, harassment of any kind, copyright infringement, theft, unauthorized access, and other violations of the law.

All information technology systems and services, including telecommunication equipment, computer systems hardware, software, and supporting infrastructure provided by the College, are the property of the Mount Carmel Health System. Accordingly, Mount Carmel reserves the right to manage all systems and services, including accessing records and other files resulting from use of these resources. Intellectual property and copyright laws may supersede College ownership of specific file content. Use of information technology systems and services should be undertaken with the knowledge that many electronically generated and stored records qualify as public records and may be subject to disclosure under the Ohio Public Records Act, All information technology systems and services, including telecommunication equipment, computer systems hardware, software, and supporting infrastructure provided by the College, are the property of the Mount Carmel Health System.
