Admissions
Admission Criteria: Adult Health CNS, Nursing Education and Nursing Administration tracks
- Baccalaureate Degree in Nursing from an accredited program; accreditation by either NLNAC or CCNE
- A cumulative undergraduate grade point average (GPA)of 3.0 on a 4.0 scale in the baccalaureate nursing program (see Admission Categories below)
- PREREQUISITES: Undergraduate Statistics and Research courses with a letter grade of “C” or better in both
- Current unrestricted Ohio RN license or eligibility for Ohio RN licensure
- Transcripts – All college transcripts, both graduate and undergraduate, must be mailed directly to Mount Carmel College of Nursing Master of Science Program
- One page, typed statement of purpose written by the applicant that outlines the applicant’s goals and objectives for the pursuit of graduate studies
- Current résumé or curriculum vitae
- A minimum score of 550 on the TOEFL for International students
Admission Categories
- Full admission
Student has met all the admission criteria for the MCCN Master’s Program.
- Non-matriculated Admission:
If a student does not meet the 3.0 GPA admissions criteria for the undergraduate BSN program, but shows potential in other areas ( recommendations, resume) the student may be admitted with non-matriculated admission status. An undergraduate BSN GPA of 2.75-2.99 is considered.
A student must take one specified course a semester for two semesters. Continued enrollment is contingent upon demonstration of sufficient ability to do graduate work. The student must achieve a minimum cumulative average of 3.00 for these 6 credits of graduate work.
The student’s application will subsequently be considered for full admission at the successful completion of the course and GPA requirements.
Students who have the non-matriculated admission status may not register for more than 6 credits.
Admission Criteria: Family Nurse Practitioner and Adult Gerontology Acute Care Nurse Practitioner tracks
- Baccalaureate Degree, Master’s Degree, or Doctoral Degree in Nursing from an accredited program; accreditation by either NLNAC or CCNE
- A cumulative grade point average (GPA) of 3.0 on a 4.0 scale in the baccalaureate nursing program or graduate nursing program is recommended
- PREREQUISITES: Undergraduate Statistics and Research courses with a letter grade of “C” or better in both
- Face to face or phone interview for qualified applicants (at the discretion of the Family Nurse Practitioner Faculty)
- Current unrestricted Ohio RN license or eligibility for Ohio RN licensure
- one year of recent clinical experience is recommended
- one page, typed statement of purpose written by the applicant that outlines the applicant’s goals and objectives for the pursuit of nurse practitioner study
- current résumé or curriculum vitae
- complete set of official transcripts from previous colleges and universities
- A minimum score of 550 on the TOEFL for International students
Master of Science Program Tracks
Mount Carmel College of Nursing Master’s Program offers four specialty tracks.
The degree earned is a Master’ of Science (MS). In addition to the four specialty tracks, Graduate certificates are offered in Nursing Education, Family Nurse Practitioner and Adult-Gerontology Acute Care Nurse Practitioner.
Student Learning Objectives
Upon completion of the program, graduates will have the knowledge and skills to:
- Assume advanced nursing roles
- Deliver culturally competent health care to diverse populations
- Use epidemiological, social, and environmental data to draw inferences
- Design programs on health promotion and disease prevention
- Evaluate nursing practice and organizational policies to assure quality outcomes
- Demonstrate leadership in relevant practice roles
- Use ethical decision making in relevant practice roles
- Collaborate with other disciplines to achieve quality outcomes
- Facilitate the use of evidence-based practice in nursing
- Promote nursing as a profession and a discipline
- Demonstrate scholarly inquiry through verbal and written communication
Characteristics of graduate study
The Mount Carmel College of Nursing Graduate Program Objectives more specifically results in a number of behaviors in learning. The characteristics of graduate study include the:
- utilization of advanced practice roles in the care of a culturally diverse patient population.
- development of refined analytical skills and broad based perspectives
- development of strong critical thinking and decision making skills
- ability to critically and accurately assess, plan, intervene, and evaluate the health and illness experiences of clients (individuals, families, and communities)
- enhanced abilities to articulate viewpoints and positions
- understanding of the wide diversity of subcultural influences on human behavior
- integration of advance theoretical foundations in health promotion, illness prevention, and maintenance of function
- utilization of new knowledge to provide high quality health care, initiate change, and improve nursing practice
- development of a comprehensive knowledge of how health policy is formulated, how to affect this process, and how it impacts clinical practice and health care delivery
- understanding the totality of health care systems, including managed care and integrated systems of delivery
- utilization of ethical decision making in research, evaluation, clinical practice, and management
