Master of Science Program
Admission Criteria
The admission requirements for the Master of Science Degree include having a:
- Baccalaureate Degree in Nursing from an accredited program – accreditation by either the Accreditation Commission for Education in Nursing (ACEN) [formerly the National League for Nursing Accrediting Commission (NLNAC)] or the Commission on Collegiate Nursing Education (CCNE)
- A cumulative undergraduate grade point average (GPA) of 3.0, on a 4.0 scale, in the baccalaureate nursing program (see Admission Categories below)
- PREREQUISITES: Undergraduate Statistics and Research courses with letter grades of “C” or higher in both
- Current unrestricted Ohio RN license or eligibility for Ohio RN licensure
- For Nurse Practitioner tracks: face-to-face or phone interview for qualified applicants (at the discretion of the Practitioner faculty)
- For Family Nurse Practitioner track: one year of recent clinical experience is recommended
- For Adult Gerontology Acute Care Nurse Practitioner track: two years of ICU clinical experience within the last five years is recommended
Application Materials:
- Completed application
- $30 application fee
- Transcripts – all college transcripts, both graduate and undergraduate, mailed directly to Mount Carmel College of Nursing Admissions Office
- One page (typed) statement of purpose, written by the applicant, that outlines the applicant’s goals and objectives for the pursuit of graduate studies
- Current resume or curriculum vitae
- Official TOEFL scores: applies to students for whom English is not the native language; minimum required TOEFL score of 550 (paper based), 213 (computer based) or 79-80 (Internet based); TOEFL scores are valid two years from the test date. To learn more about the TOEFL, visit www.ets.org/toefl

Admission Categories
- Full admission
Student has met all the admission criteria for the MCCN Master’s Program.
- Undeclared major admission:
Undeclared master’s students are those who have not yet declared a major track at the College. Master’s students must declare their major prior to completing 12 semester credits. Students who fail to declare their major after completing 12 semester credits will not be permitted further course enrollment. The Graduate Program Advisors will help master’s undeclared students monitor their academic progress and plan their course schedule. - Non-degree admission:
If a student does not meet the 3.0 GPA admissions criteria for the undergraduate BSN program, but shows potential in other areas (recommendations, resume) the student may be admitted with non-degree admission status. An undergraduate BSN GPA of 2.75-2.99 is considered.
A student must take one specified course a semester for two semesters. Continued enrollment is contingent upon demonstration of sufficient ability to do graduate work. The student must achieve a minimum cumulative average of 3.00 for these 6 credits of graduate work.
The student’s application will subsequently be considered for full admission at the successful completion of the course and GPA requirements.
Students who have non-degree admission status may not register for more than 6 credits.
Transfer Credit
The institution makes no promises to prospective students regarding the acceptance of credit awarded by examination or credit for transfer until an evaluation has been conducted. MCCN refrains from the transcription of credit from other institutions that it does not apply to its own programs. A maximum of 12 credit hours of equivalent course work (with minimum grades of “B”) may be transferred from another graduate program. Once enrolled at Mount Carmel College of Nursing, degree candidates are required to complete all degree course work offered through Mount Carmel College of Nursing.
All entering Mount Carmel students are required to demonstrate a minimum level of computer and Internet competency (Technology Proficiency). Students must have the ability to:
- Log onto the Internet and other applications with a user ID and password.
- Use a search engine on the Internet.
- Use the Library databases to retrieve articles.
- Receive, send, and reply to email.
- Develop, file, revise, edit, and print Microsoft Word documents.
- Attach documents/files to email messages and/or assignments.
- Follow and participate in an online discussion or chat.
The Technology Proficiency is an independent self-study online exercise.
- A new student enrolled in any on-line course must complete the Technology Proficiency prior to the start of the first course.
- A new student enrolled exclusively in onsite courses must complete the Technology Proficiency by the end of week 8 of the first semester of enrollment.
- A new student will not be permitted to enroll for the second semester until successful completion of the Technology Proficiency requirement.

Master of Science Program Tracks
Mount Carmel College of Nursing Master’s Program offers five specialty tracks. The degree earned is a Master of Science (MS). In addition to the five specialty tracks, Graduate Certificates are offered in the same five tracks. The Graduate Certificates are post-master’s options.
